Common Childhood Mental Wellness Concerns
Common Symptoms of Depressive Disorders in Children:
- Withdraw from social activities or things they used to enjoy
- Increased isolation
- Increased fatigue or tiredness
- Sudden behavioral problems at school
- Changes in eating or sleeping habits
Difficulties communicating through different childhood and teen stages can feel very isolating for the child and frustrating for the parent. Add in peer issues and sibling fights and your child may feel like everyone hates them or that they don’t know how to talk to people anymore. Finding ways to communicate as a family can help solve difficult issues today and tomorrow.
Some Inattention Symptoms: Easily distracted; Loses items easily; Difficulty with organizing; Difficulty following instructions; Frequently forgetting to finish homework.
Some Hyperactivity Symptoms: Talking a lot; Difficulty sitting still; Running or climbing; Blurting out answers
Life can be really overwhelming when you are learning new things every day! Sometimes kids need help developing new coping skills and processing through life stressors such as school, friends, or future worries.
Childhood anxiety disorders are characterized by extreme fear or worry (out of proportion to the situation) that impacts a child’s functioning. This might be seen by some of the following:
- changes in mood
- sleep disturbance
- muscle tension
- increase irritability
- changes in eating
- fear of social situations or of being away from caregivers
- school refusal
- shortness of breath
- racing heartbeat
